De-Mystifying The Acronym's in the Senior Living Industry

Updated: May 15, 2023

If you’re like most people, you hear many acronyms scattered into everyday language and may not even realize it. But when it comes to looking for help across the Senior Care industry, there are some specific to the people guiding your loved ones through it that can be confusing. Let me give you a few today that can help you to easily sound like a professional!

CCRC - Continuing Care Retirement Community. A place to live where they provide different levels of support and care, usually starting at the independent living level, Assisted Living and Memory Care all in one location.

CNA/RMA- Certified Nurse Aid , Registered Med Aide. These are usually found in Assisted Livings and are the folks who will be working in your loved ones rooms, passing medications and making sure everyone’s clean and getting meals. Providing showers or bed baths, assisting with toileting and generally keeping everyone safe and fed. Sounds like these are people we all need to be aware of!

ADL - activities of daily living. These are the basic things that someone in admissions or social work will be looking at how well your loved one is doing at taking care of these tasks himself or herself and how much assistance they may need if placed in a facility. They are; Bathing, dressing, grooming, eating and toileting. If you’ve got these three vocabulary words in your basic lingo, you will start to sound like a professional when discussing Senior Care! Be on the lookout for next blog post when we will be discussing how the different care levels are billed.
